The Darkness Within was originally contracted by Lothian Books in Melbourne. Lothian were looking to launch an adult series of dark suspense stories and advertised towards the end of 2005 for manuscripts to be sent in. Mine was one of four chosen for the original series, slated to be printed in June-August 2006.
At the end of 2005 Lothian was bought by Time Warner UK, who in turn were bought by Hachette Livre in early 2006.
In April 2006 HL cancelled Lothian’s push into the adult market and absorbed the Dark Suspense series into their own operations. The first three books came out in 2006, but The Darkness Within was held back and attached to the Hodder imprint, and has now been released through Hachette’s new imprint, Hachette Australia. It hit the shelves on May 24. Along the way it picked up a new cover, about which we were very excited.
The book was officially launched at Convergence II in Melbourne on June 9 by Robert Hood, with a Brisbane launch on June 19.
